AFABW Gambia Chapter Helping Kids Say No to Drugs

The kids in our Gambia chapter have been “Getting high on Art, and saying no to drugs” – through the use of our new coloring book created by members of AFABW.

Funds were raised and sent to Chapter Director, Fabakary Sanneh to get five-hundred books printed. He has put them to good use with local kids and also got them into the Jappineh Lower Basic School.

The kids enjoy reading the book to get the message and then bringing it to life by coloring it in.

It starts out with illustrations of active young artists and states: “Create means to do or make something that is a new thing. When you create, it can make you happy. Did you ever create something?”

And then the book contrasts this message with what it’s like to do drugs – and the kids really get the difference.

Fabakary shared some of the successes:

  • They don’t want to choose drugs.
  • They want to promote creativity.
  • Parents see the social changes regarding drug abuse.
  • Idleness stops and creativity increases.
  • The schools welcome these initiatives.
  • There is a request for many more books!
